General Description

Part of the Cork Main Drainage scheme, the Railway Yard involved two 1 metre diameter micro-tunnelled pipelines one under the operational Irish Rail tracks and residential buildings adjacent to Kent Station and one in the Turners Cross area of the city. The tunneling is achieved by means of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) that drills as it is hydraulically jacked from a drive shaft. Precast concrete pipes are inserted one by one at the shaft and follow the TBM until it reaches its destination. Excavation is carried out using a rotating head on the face of the TBM and then turned into slurry and pumped via slurry pipes to an overground filtration system. The system is capable of operating under 30 metres of water pressure. An above ground control cabin houses the state of the art computerised Control Panel where the operator controls the entire system.
